  4.     DIED. R.D. Laing, 61, British psychiatrist whose radical
  5. views rocked the medical establishment; of a heart attack; in
  6. Saint-Tropez. In his 1960 book The Divided Self: An Existential
  7. Study in Sanity and Madness, Laing argued that schizophrenia
  8. might be an individual's attempt to opt out of an intolerable
  9. world. He championed patients' rights, condemned the use of
  10. electroshock and lobotomies, experimented with the therapeutic
  11. use of LSD and mescaline. Although he later modified his
  12. romanticized view of insanity, Laing's break with conventional
  13. psychiatry made him a counterculture hero.
